A look in the cry

So, last day of orientation was today. School starts soon. I still have lots to do, but I think I'm going to be almost ready for the first day of school. Except for all the student accounts I just remembered I need to create.

And the over analysation continues, as I didn't have to talk about my drawing again today either. Maybe it won't happen. Wow, that would be actually pretty cool, in my opinion.

Today, we had to work on school goals. I was part of a team, and people didn't like my goal idea. It was pretty interesting, how to shoot down someone's idea on team unity (the goal group I was ironically assigned to. Maybe it's not ironic, because I really do care about this area) while appearing to do it in a unified and loving manner. I found that fun. I'm scribbling down my draft, while other people are talking about something else. Later, then, after we got done, I got one of my random sentences stuck in my head, and so I start writing it down on my notepad so it will leave my head, and the teacher next to me asks, "Are you still working on the goal?" I say, "Uh, no. See, I get these random sentences stuck in my head, and I have to write or type them out so they will leave." Teacher: "Oh, that's... ok." Yeah, I make my own kind of friends everywhere I go.

Speaking of friends, two other guys and I helped one of the teachers move some heavy stuff around the other day, so she repaid us with cookies. These are the best homemade cookies I have ever had in a foreign country.

My new roommate moved in today. He's got the upstairs room, I've got one of them downstairs. Hopefully the maintenance staff prioritizes the stench in the hallway from the leaky bathroom. Maybe if he complains too, they'll fix it soon.

In other news...

Come to think of it, I don't really have lots of other news. I assembled AV carts today, and lugged them all over campus. I helped some people with computers. I worked on various and sundry things. One thing I'm going to try to come up with is two concrete, definable goals for the semester. One will be personal, one will be school-related. Something somewhat audacious. Like writing a procurement, ordering and shipping system, because the one they have now is pretty ridiculously bad. It's just fill out an excel spreadsheet, and who knows what gets ordered, how it gets shipped here, and where it is in the shipment. They need a more streamlined process, and a computer based one could make a lot of things better. There are a wide number of paper forms that flow around here that could be a lot simpler. I'm going to work on that. As far as personal goals, a couple of the guys here have decided to try getting together weekly. I am glad of this happening, and hope it will be cool.

Well, it's about nine, it's Friday tomorrow, and I have some things I want to try to do, so I think I'm going to sign out.

I would like to walk like I talk. I wish that I could stop being superman. I'm no superman.

Fear of forensics

"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings! Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!"

Welp. More problems I wish I could solve right away, that turn out to be slightly more complicated because of the basic lack of infrastructure here. This proves to be frustrating to me. For example, instead of running CAT5 through the walls to wall plates as part of the construction, it gets afterwards, through holes drilled in the walls. So then, it means those cables that then get run under the carpet along the wall have a higher failure rate than a regular wall + patch cable setup would. And you have to rerun the cords through the wall.

And did I mention that there is not one single managed switch in this place, and the their is only one switch inside a cabinet, and several of them are just screwed or glued into the wall near an electrical outlet? And so when the electrical outlet (which might not have been wired to code? Wait, I don't know if there IS A CODE HERE!) starts developing problems, either we have to rip the switch off the wall, or someone (hopefully not in the Venn diagram representing me) has to rewire the outlet?

On the plus side, I two of my headaches have been lessened in the last day, and it seems that I get to figure out this new intercom/sound system that got installed while everyone was gone for the summer. Additionally, I got the computer lab finally set up, only to realize that the new AC they installed is... smack dab where the projector projected previously. Now, we either need to move the projector, or the AC register. I think we'll figure out how to move the projector.

On the ambivalent side, I didn't have to talk about my drawing today. This means I got another day to over-analyze how I present myself to these people. The joy of this is just beginning. Hopefully they forget about me doing my little presentation/talk tomorrow.

I went out to eat with a few of the other teachers tonight (since Wednesday = Friday). They called me and invited me. I find this exceedingly strange, and have decided to chalk it up to the fact that some people are far more hospitable and friendly like that than I.

Welp. I probably shouldn't have said hi to that fish back in West Germany on 7 October, 1923. It just looked like it needed a friend.

They can't be mine.

We had all-staff meetings this morning, more tomorrow. Part of what we had to do was to take a large piece of paper (poster size) and crayons and draw significant events that happened in our life, things we can remember that helped to shape us. Well. You can imagine how enthused I would be to participate in such an activity. So, I begin to grid out my paper, and start filling in little pictures, things I can remember. I start with my family, with a couple of favorite childhood memories. I made enough space for (I think) 16 pictures, and I quickly realize that I am halfway through my childhood, and I'm about half done with my sheet. So I decide to speed it up a little, which I do. At this point, I have 4 panels left with which to go from about high school to now. I realize that this is impossible to do.

And as I look at the pictures, I also come to a realization on something. Lots of these pictures don't really tell you anything about me. They tell you things I remember. They tell you activities that I did, people I remember, events. They don't really tell you anything about me, and I drew them that way, maybe not fully consciously, but that's how I drew them. I drew a picture of my earliest memory, which is Jenna getting to sleep in a bed, and I had to sleep in the crib. (Paradoxically, because I slept like a rock, and she didn't.) I drew a picture of me jumping up and down in N & J's room when Mom and Dad brought in my cake the morning I turned four, because I was really, really excited to turn four. (Yes, I remember that.) Of my uncles throwing me back and forth what seemed like TWENTY FEET in Grandma and Grandpa's living room at 516, way back when. Of the family riding together in a station wagon everywhere. Shoveling snow with Grandpa at 516 while Mom and Dad and N were in Florida. A 4-H Clover. A Computer. Playing basketball. A basketball play. More I can't remember at the moment. All activities, all memories. Tells you what I did, not how I became what I am.

The truth? First off, I don't like to talk about me and my feelings. You say, "But you do it on your blog?" Strewth. But this isn't immediate, it isn't dialog. It's just me writing away, and you reading it. If you ask me about this in real life, I get uncomfortable. Talking, I don't like. And even here, I don't always talk about what drives me. And when I do talk about what drives me, one must realize that I am an unreliable narrator. Sometimes I even just write things because they are the word pattern that I am thinking about at the time, not because it actually has any longterm meaning.

The digression aside, back to the drawing. Several people got up and talked about their pictures. I quickly realized that most people had drawn either their life as a journey (roads, trains, maps), as a beautifully illustrated collage (that was the art teachers), or as some fundamental visual idea that integrates their life into a single theme. I had a bunch of pictures that were quickly chosen to make it sound like I was trying to describe the things that I had done, but without telling much about me.

The more significant thing here? We had to spend 4-6 minutes describing our drawing, and how it told our life story. So, imagine all these people giving a wonderful testimony to describe their life so far, how they had this passion ignited in them to go overseas when they were six, these great experiences that they had had, how they had been taken out of wretchedness and despair... and I'm going to talk about how I jumped on the trampoline when I took history tests when I was a kid?

Fortunately, I got out of it this morning. Enough people took more than their allotted time, so we're going to finish up tomorrow. Woohoo. Now that I've had an extra ten, twenty hours to overanalyze my drawing, I get to talk about it. What am I going to do? I think I'm not going to talk about it. I'm going to say that if people want to know more about what I drew, they can ask me. I'm going to flat out admit that I drew the drawing so that it would hopefully reveal as little as possible about me. Because I don't want people to be able to push my buttons. That nine months ago, if you would have told me that I was going to quit my job for a four month temp position overseas, I would have laughed. That I really don't understand why I am here. If I could figure that out, maybe I could tell you what was significant in my life.... but then again, I may just talk about my little pictures, my attempt at being engaging and shallow seen through, and people hopefully understanding why I didn't say more.

Ok, enough of the whining. I can lay awake and think about what I'm going to say for another hour, and all of you that read this are wondering if I actually did anything today other than process a silly little team building exercise.

News on what I did today. I got certified to run tests on this testing system we are offering tests on. It was more of an ordeal than it should have been, because I kept flipping past the seven pages on certification in the binder I had about the system. We got in power cables, so I plugged the computer lab computers in. Tomorrow, I need to turn all of them on when the generator is on, to see if it will work. I set up a couple computers in the library, scavenged some parts to get various pieces of equipment working, told dumb jokes at supper (they were talking about getting ten year visas to another country, and I asked, "If a college professor gets a ten year visa, are they set forever?" One of the teachers got it right away, and hit me. I had to explain it to all the others. Oh, you don't get it? Say year like yer.), went to the corner store for some stuff (the shopkeeper was, shall we say, impressed at my saying thank you in Dari. I hope I didn't insult his great aunt accidentally.), read some articles on Active Directory (fascinating), and have now been blogging for half an hour.

I don't know what tomorrow is going to bring. Maybe talking about my drawing won't be as painful of an experience as I imagine it will be.

Ok, to go back to that for just a moment before I sign out, there are other things that are going to make me uncomfortable. First, I am not a teacher. I came here because it's what came up, not because of any plan or intention. I did what I always do, vacillate for a while, then just decide. I don't know if it really was a call, or just my emotional outpouring at the moment. And where does that leave me? Just here. Just here.

Perhaps through an agency other than my own, I will learn the secret of being content in all situations.

I don't have issues...

... I have subscriptions.

Well, not really, at the moment. It's just a favorite saying of mine, made a favorite about a while ago.

I realized earlier today that next Monday will be the first full day I ever spend in a primary or secondary school while it is in session. Fact of the matter, I can't think of any significant time I've spent in a primary or secondary educational institution during a normal school day. This is going to be interesting.

Anyway, today not much happened, and yet a lot. The electrician finally finished wiring the computer lab, only for me to find out that there are apparently no power cables for any of the 17 computers or monitors. So either I have to find them, or we go buy them. The second option is not something I am looking forward too, but something we may have to deal with. Additionally, I have a dorm building to which the network has not been working for a couple of days, and I think I need to get new cable run. However, I haven't gotten it done yet. I really should. Finally, I've been taking a rather more relaxed attitude toward work. I work from about 7:00ish to 5:30ish, and haven't gone back in later the past two days. I don't know if that's the best attitude, but the way things are going, it's not all going to get done no matter how much I work. This way, I don't kill myself too early.

Additionally, we had new staff orientation today. Obviously, I can't talk about everything that we talked about, but it just reminded me how different this place is from home. Cultural things like, here it is impolite to ask someone to pass something to you at the table (it is rude to interrupt someone else's eating), and it is the height of politeness to reach across the table and grab something. Furthermore, appearance and honor are far different concepts here than home. Just things to think about as I continue on in life.

There's some stuff happening in country that has a different meaning to me than it did just a few weeks ago, for several reasons. In many ways, this land is dark and not getting lighter. Yet there is a Light that is flourishing in ways that we cannot see.

Finally, I received some somewhat depressing news from home. This was not entirely desirable, but in many ways, it serves as a reminder that not a thing in this life is permanent, and this life should be used in that knowledge.

Put your house arrest away...

This, such as it is, is my office. Sorry, the problem with pictures on the blog is that our oversubscribed satellite connection is horribly upstream limited, so it took 5 minutes just to upload that photo. So there it is. My office.

In other news, I don't have any. I feel like I'm swimming upstream with all the things I keep finding out. Trees, forest.

Oh, I did get to play architect sort of today. See, we're going into a new building, and I'm sort of in charge of getting the network coordinated. So, since we have to find out where everything is supposed to go, and how long the runs are supposed to be, and since apparently in Afghanistan, you don't get little things like blueprints, I got to measure all the rooms and stuff, and then draw it up roughly so we can figure out where the network drops go. It was a diversion away from all the other things I have to get done.

Orientation next couple of days.

Not a thing left to say.

Unnecessary

Well, today was a day of rest, (Friday is Sunday here), and I actually didn't do any work. I'm kind of disappointed in myself, because there is a lot to do, but that's the way I guess it goes sometimes.

We went out this morning, and then went to lunch at a Thai place afterwards. We got back, I moved over to the new house that I'll be staying in (the place of the family of the gent I am replacing), then played volleyball for a couple hours, then went and had supper at one of the ladies' houses on campus, stayed and chatted for a while. Found out that I'm not the only one worried about fitting in, but for different reasons. Reassuring, in a way.

Lots to do the rest of the week. I took some pictures today, I may post one or two, but I'm kind of trying to be careful about what I take, and especially about what I post. I'll probably have lots of photos once I get back.

Hope you all have a good weekend, I did. Feel free to send me e-mails (please just be cautious in what you send), ask someone who would know if you want my address.

Look! It's not a wildebeast!!!

Today has been an gradually more satisfactory day. I woke up at 2:48 A.M., and laid there until about 5:00 when I actually fell back asleep for about an hour and a half. The bad part about that was that then I was really, really wasted. I came over to work about 7:30, and didn't get much done this morning, because I was really out of it. About 11:00, things started going better, and once I had lunch, I really got on a roll, and did get a decent amount of stuff done. I'm finally to the point where I'm pretty sure I understand what I need to know and get done, and I have a couple of discrete tasks (computer fixing) to do, which will help me stay focused. So, morning poor, afternoon better.

Supper was good, man, I'm glad I don't have to cook for myself. I do that poorly enough in America, think how it would be in a foriegn country!

But the better news is that today, today was luggage day. Not only did most of the luggage that other folks were missing come in, but mine did too! Yay! I've never been so happy to carry nigh unto 80 pounds up a flight of stairs. I am pretty pleased, I'm wearing different pants, and different shoes! Heck, I even put on my baseball cap, just for the fun of it. (I know, this seems weird for me. Hey, I think it's wierd, and it's me doing it!)

Some folks have requested pictures - I'm sorry I don't have any yet. Tomorrow is functionally Saturday, so I might take some then... I don't know, lots to do.

Oh, and I might be moving, out of the men's dorm over to a house (still on campus), which is fine. They want to do some different stuff with the rooms, and since there's another guy coming who will probably be at the school temporarily, it makes sense to move him and I into the house, which is where the family of the gentlemen who I'm filling in for lives while they are here.

In other news, I think I might be able to fit in here, in my own way. Of course, I did oddly surprise some people earlier when they asked me what I did to fix the internet in their house, and I told them the cord was bad, so I put a new end on it. She asked me how I knew it was bad, and I told her that the wires are color-coded, and they were in the wrong order. Folks looked at me in a 'How do you know that' fashion, and someone said to my inquirer, "Well, I guess you know not to ask that question again!" I was amused.

Well, it's about 7:00 P.M., and one of the teachers is having folks to her house then, so I'd best be off.

Like a giant holiday tree

Outside my window, there is a mountain. The mountain is lit up like a holiday tree, what with all of the housing that is on it.

I didn't post yesterday, sorry. Went around Kabul some with the administrator, tried to take in as much as I could from e-mails and instructions. There is enough going on here that I can't just absorb it all in a day or two.

I thought we were pretty fast and loose with the way we did some of the network infrastructure things at my old job. Here, we have CAT5 stretched between buildings that has to be at about 299.9 feet, excuse me, 99.9 meters. There are no managed switches in the place, and lots of CAT5 just pushed through holes in the wall. Definitely different.

I went shopping yesterday, a couple times, a couple places. Since we have to take care of our own breakfast, I got a slightly out of date box of Frosted Flakes. (It will probably be better than the in-date Bran Fiber Flakes would have been). The interesting thing about this is that the shopkeeper wiped the dust off with a wet rag before selling it to me. I found this definitely different.

Day two of life in Kabul. Woke up early again. One interesting thing about Kabul is that their days are basically about an hour or two ahead of the states as far as daylight goes. It gets light enough to work by 5:00 or so, but here at 7:45, it is pretty close to as dark as it will get. This further makes my internal sleep schedule a little unraveled, but I think tonight may get me back on track. At 7:45, I'm not sleepy or anything, so I'm hoping I can stay up and read or do something for another hour, hour and a half. I figure if I can swing that, then I'll be well on the way to getting a normal sleep schedule.

Today started off interesting. Power went out around 5:45, and when I got over to the office around 7:10, 7:20ish, I was kinda freaked because the server had been running on batteries (don't worry, there's lots) the whole time, and the battery time indicator was getting close to zero. Right as I went to shut it down, they turned the generators on, and we were back up and going.

The rest of the day was just spent in more figuring out what is going on, and what needs to happen. I think I'm starting to get some handle on it. Not sure yet. More teachers came today, as did some of the other administration. It felt like a ghost school here today and yesterday, though. At least that gives me plenty of time to try to get up to speed as fast as I can.

I was talking to one of the male teachers here tonight, and one of the things that I got around to commenting on (I don't remember how, exactly) was that I haven't ever worked for a school before, and that that was going to... not present a difficulty, precisely, but just be a different experience for me. The subtle interplay between teacher and student. The differing desires of the teachers. The different priorities. However, one thing that I find is that once again, I am in a support role. Don't get me wrong, that is certainly the way that I prefer it, but it just makes for some fun times, because what I am doing is not the priority. I have to remember that.

Anyway, I think I'm adjusting fairly OK. I didn't go anywhere today, but we had lunch and supper in the dining hall. Even though the food isn't what I'm used too, I'm very thrilled about not having to worry about cooking. I'm pretty sure they do lunch and supper doing the school year also. About this, I am happy.

As I am sure others can identify with in their situation, it is pretty interesting coming into a place where most of the people have been here for a year or two, and so know each other, the environment, the paradigms and the pressures, the times and the tint of the landscape in the same way. When I don't have any real reference points for a lot of the things they discuss (about people, students, locale events), it makes being around for their conversations interesting. Another interesting thing is that since these folks haven't seen each other for a couple months, and have all gone and done their own interesting and exciting things in the interim, they all want to hear about what the others have done. Nothing wrong with it, just means that it gives me a lot of opportunities to sit, listen, and try to understand who these people are, what drives them, and what they are consumed by.

OK, I said that at 7:45 it was as dark as it was going to be. It's now 8:08, and it's even darker. And instead of a holiday tree, it looks like a gigantic colony sleeper ship which has grown new modules over thousands of years, cruising just outside my window.

Well, it's probably time to close this blog entry down. When you feel the mess, it just takes the time away from the chances that you had to be the singular identification of the things that you always wanted to be. What that means, I don't rightly now, but everyone thinks it sounds pretty. And by everyone, I mean the lemurs.

The Bright Stars Shining

Well, I stayed up all night at JFK on... Friday, I guess it would have been. Oh, I micro-napped some, but mostly just stayed awake. Finally, I was able to get on the standby morning flight to Dubai, that was a long 13 hours. I mostly stayed awake, probably total of 2 hours of sleep. Read some, watched 3 movies (Stranger than Fiction [Very Good], Shooter [Decent], TMNT [Hey, I only had 2 hours left, and needed a short movie] Tried to figure out what how to get where in Dubai, was able to finally find the transfer desk from terminal 1 (Crowded Duty-Free, international terminal) to terminal 2 [Quiet, 'regional' terminal]. Got luggage supposedly transferred, took shuttle over to other terminal.

When I got into the gate at the second terminal for Kam Air to Kabul, I looked confused on what to do next, since I thought they told me they were boarding the plane, and lots of people were just sitting there. I looked really confused, I'm sure, and a nice young Caucasian woman helped me out. I was really glad, because I would have tried to board a plane when there was no plane, since you just hang out until everyone gets up to go to the bus to get on the plane. Weird. Anyway, I was further really glad when she asked me if it was my first time in Kabul, and then what I was doing there. As it so happens, she is a teacher for the school! That really occurred well for both of us, as it was good for her to have a trustworthy male nearby, and good for me since then I had some kind of guidance. Anyway, I'm at the school now, it's 5:30 P.M., and my plan is to try to stay up for another 3-4 hours, so then I might be on real Kabul time, or close to it. I don't know if that's going to happen.

Other little tidbits -

I was on the flight from Cinci to JFK with a couple that was also heading to Dubai, so we ran through the airport together, and tried to get on the standby list for the next flight. Then, on the flight, I was supposed to sit by the husband, but I swapped with him and his wife so they could sit together.

I have no checked luggage. I am trying to figure out if it even made it to Dubai, which it supposedly did. Fortunately, if it did get to Dubai, it should get to Kabul, and there are lots more people that are going to be getting picked up at the airport, so we should be able to get it.

Kabul is a very pedestrian, very crazy traffic city. I'm glad I don't have to drive.

I speak no Dari or Pashtun. This will be interesting.

All I can think of for now. First post from Kabul, first post from out of U.S. soil!

I guess I don't mind hanging out with

Still at JFK. Might be finally getting to leave in about 2.75 hours. Don't know yet, and am not sure how the flight to Kabul is going to work out. But everything will work out ok in the end. I know this to be True.

The Zenith

Well, I'm back. An hour or two later, I have now visited every terminal, every terminal in JFK airport. I have discovered that there is only one place to find food, that is terminal 8/9, a little place that was open 24 hours where I got some gatorade and a ridiculously overpriced but healthy and tasty group of grapes.

Temporary digression. A gent just walked by whom, I kid you not, looked like he just gont done with a stint on Swiss Family Robinson.

So, I'm back again, surfing on the WiFi and blogging to kill time. It's about 4:00 A.M., I'm hoping to be able to make it another two or three hours until check-in for the other flights starts, and I can get into the more comfortable terminal area.

Until then, I'm going to end this post for now. I hope I don't fall asleep soon....

Buried

Flight was delayed out of Cinci for 1:20. I ended up getting to the gate as they were closing. So, after calling the 800 number, explaining that it wasn't my fault Delta didn't contact Emirates when I told them in Cinci that I was worried I was going to miss my flight, they swapped my reservation with the 11:15 tomorrow (wellllll, today, now.) for free. So, right now I'm basically delayed 24 hours, and since the delays were for weather, there's no hotel that I can really get for a realistic dollar amount. I'm hanging out in the concourse (since I couldn't even check in to get into the terminal), waiting for the place to open back up in five hours so I can get found, a couch to sit on, etc. I'm going to hang out online until my battery runs down (since I don't have electrical anywhere convenient that I've seen...), and then probably walk around the airport some more to stay awake. And maybe find food. Food would be good.

Great start to a day...

And since I don't have anything better to do, and I need to exercise my brain to stay awake, I am going to ramble for a couple moments about some things that I thought about whilst in the air over various American cities today.

Thought the first. I can tell roughly how new suburban subdivisions are from the air, and you can too, if you learn my new simple step. That simple step is to just look at trees. New subdivs don't have _any_ big trees along the raods or houses, because they haven't had time to grow.

Thought the second. There are lots of people traveling on airplanes to get places. Who knew?

Thought the third. I had a lot better thoughts earier, but somehow, I have lost most of them. This disappoints me.

Well, I'm off to read news as a last stab to keeping awake. Take care.

Gray

I made it to Cincinatti A-OK. Flights seem to be on schedule. My eardrums swelled up on the way here. I've never had that happen on a flight before.

Miles to go ere I sleep.

*EDIT*

Well, my flight from Cinci to JFK has been delayed over an hour, so I don't know how this is going to work. I need to get to Dubai in the next 26 hours, so we'll hope I can get there...

Lots more miles to go.

Egress

This will probably be my last blog entry from America.

I'm leaving the house shortly, and will begin a two-day journey to Kabul.

Pins and needles.

I leave here a stranger. I go there a stranger. There is one who knows my name, and to Him, I am not a stranger.

Ways to break these...

Kind of crazy today. Mostly packed. Shots not as big of a deal as I had thought they might be. And to reveal my inner nerdiness, my roommate got Babylon 5 : The Lost Tales on DVD today, so we watched that tonight. It was mostly decent, two short tales, the second better than the first.

Friday is the day...

Samson and the Detour

It's out of phase.

A lot of lasts have been happening to me over the past week. Last baseball game, we lost, but there was some good stuff happening. Last weekend, probably slacked a little too much, but... yeah. I went and talked to the dad who is going to take over the Jr. High boys ball team next year. Glad, knowing they'll be in good hands, but sad, since I won't be involved. Last Sunday at church, I got recognized up front. Which was nice, but it just reminds me of the different places I'll be. Last study last night, weird to think about. Xopher and I talked for way too long about football, since he doesn't get to pick my brain the rest of the year. Last day at work today. They had a nice lunch for me, got me a neat card, and a big box of Rolos (Folks, I don't know if they'll make it to Kabul. No, not the heat in the luggage, I just may weigh three pounds more when I get there... :)) But it's still lasts, still changing. Last accountability group tonight, which was just different to know I won't be there next week.

Two people said some things to me over the past couple of days, expressed in different ways, but true. One said that in ten years, I'll look back and realize that this upcoming experience has made where I am [in ten years] possible, and I wouldn't have been the same without it. The other said that God will change me in Afghanistan, and I will grow in ways that I would never have here. I know the first is true, and I hope that the second will become so, that I can hold up and grow during the process. I know He'll provide the doors, I must see them and walk through, out of me, and into who He wants me to be.

I found out today that I have to get some more shots than I was planning on. We'll see if I can get them in the... _three_ more days I have in America. PR that this won't be more than a hiccup, and I can get all the shots that I need.

Finally, Starflyer59 is perhaps the coolest band in the world. Silver and My Island are brilliant, brilliant albums. Even Jenna likes My Island, so you know that such work won't frighten small children and is indeed where it's at!

Altars Unsuspected

Well, I am in the process of packing. Actually, I am taking all of the stuff I bought today and inventorying it, and starting to plan how I'm going to pack it. Additionally, I am removing items from their original packaging, because I don't need to take cardboard dividers or stuff like that on the plane that counts toward my weight limit.

In a part of this process, I was noting that I now have a not inconsiderable pile of new socks. However, as daunting as this pile it, it pales in comparison to the pile of existing socks. Obviously, feet are important to me. A disclaimer, I didn't buy all of the socks that I have in the new pile. But still, I am responsible for them. Here is a video that displays my... collection.

I am thoroughly depressed by my consumptive nature, and took time out of the process to blog about my failure. I think I'm going to throw away any sock that is even slightly hole.

Empires

Cannot find the direction or the appropriate findings for the certain or the unclear. Accreditation. For unknown supremacy. For the last day of the season. A statement for the world to know and the aggression who are insolvent. The sightseeing and the surrendered frightening. Undertones of defensiveness. Northern and farther.

It wasn't my fault, of course. It was the fault of someone else. Unbeknownst to the friendliness of the sensation. Badgering and hoodwinked.

I got Boot Camp installed on the new MacBook. I still need to do some configuration, but it seems to be working fine.

Waves of puppetry

Well.

I am going to be taking my personal effects (which consist of: a jacket, a pull-over, my small tool set, headphones, and then a Bible and MP3 player that go home everyday anyway.) out of the office. On Monday morning, it's no longer my office, but will belong to my successor at Grain Belt. This is a bittersweet moment. I know that the transition to a different life is coming soon, but this has been a second home of sorts for the last two years.

I took my xkcd comics off the wall, cleared out a couple more old junker computers, and was somewhat sad.

I guess it's good that I travel and live fairly light.

I'm going up to Omaha to visit Duerksen tonight, he just got back from Alaska. Strange how intersections in life... intersect.

I'm getting all mopey. Time to hit the road.

She's the queen...

I'm beating my head against a wall, trying to discover why my previously working software has suddenly gone poof, so I'm taking a break to blog here. I don't have anything of substance or of mediocrity to post, so instead I just go ahead and leave the inspiration to respiration, and post what comes to mind, which is usually toast.

It comes as no surprise that I, in point of fact, do not actually understand what is going on in my life, in the world, or in the reducing state that is my short remaining impending time here in America. Different people have different understandings and expectations of what my reaction to their question on, "Are you excited to be going?" should be. See, I've already processed all the excitement. I mean, I do get flashes of it, but mostly, it's just an accepted reality. I'm not the kind of person that really worries about today or even tomorrow. I worry about a year from now, five years, ten years. But at the same time, the immediate future does concern me. I guess perhaps I'm really just a person who controls the things that he worries about, and consciously or unconsciously varies those topics for worry. So perhaps the real question is, why do I change my answer? The answer is, I don't. I just have different answers at different points in time.

the other thing is that I'm going over to serve in different ways than people might normally expect. I'm not a people-oriented person. I am an information or task oriented person. I'm going over to enable others to do their jobs better, to be a background guy. I'm going to be behind the scenes, not really seen or with a role easily understood by some. I'm going to be invisible when the job goes right, and there when something goes wrong to pick up the pieces. But I won't be out in front or a vocal presence. This may contrast with what some people expect, and maybe I'm limiting myself, but I believe that we are used in ways that we don't explain or understand, and that many of those ways are extensions of the person whom we already are. And though I often desire a twisted sense of fame, I know that in myself I'm nothing but words of the meaningless.

Nothing.

Someone else is out there who will serve to fulfill the public, vocal roles. I'll be in the back, making sure they can concentrate on that.

In the end, if there were to myself and another person in a room, you could watch for a while, and quickly say that, "She's the queen..."

Whither invigoration....?

I got my new MacBook. In point of fact, I am typing this blog post on said MacBook. I am rather unfamiliar with the key layout for common tasks, but that's ok. I'm sure I'll get more used to it as it goes on... It has this semi-interesting integrated little camera, that lets you take wonky little pictures, so here, I provide you with one. I need to figure out Boot Camp so I can dual boot this puppy to XP, so I can use it when I need to.

Tonight, I played some soccer, first half, did ok. We were winning because we had a couple of the good high school kids scavenged over for us. I'm assuming they did fine the second half, I had to go because....

We had baseball, and I was semi-in charge. The kids played a good first inning, and good top of the second, but then we struck out 9 times in a row, and gave up lots of runs. Disappointing.

I guess I haven't really posted a lot about the rest of life recently, so, here, perhaps, goes.

I have a fair amount of work that should be completed shortly. I've got new guy here next week, so next week is going to be training him. Ten more days. Time seems to have gone by pretty fast. I'm probably not going to get everything done, but that's the way it goes. I'm fairly confident about the hands that I'll be leaving my work in, I think he has the tools and background to do a good job, probably a much better job than I could do. Some people might dispute that statement, but this guy is going to be pretty good.

I'm trying to get all of my paperwork sorted, stuff sent, scanned, supernumerated...

I am struggling to understand the role that I am going to be undertaking upon my arrival there, with regards to my approach to others. I'm not an outgoing person, really, and tend to be insular and not necessarily needing to be involved in all of the latest and greatest activities. This presents something of a conundrum, as I will be involved with a fairly small community, one that will naturally try to draw me in. This makes me worried that perhaps if I do not fit in as well as I would like, I will not necessarily be able to adjust as well as some others could, and that I might turn some people off because I'm not hyper talkative, and can be fairly obtuse at times.

I also sometimes wonder about my ability to cope in a foreign culture.

This post is getting heavy, it's getting late, and I think perhaps the thing for me to do at this point is conclude it and say, adroitly, abstraction.

Some like the fall, but I prefer french lasagna, baby!

Well, my days of taking me seriously are definitely coming to a middle.

I already feel a little weird for buying a MacBook. I justified it because, since they're Intel-Based these days, I can run XP on it just fine, and the specs were the same or less expensive than a similarly equipped Dell or $VENDOR laptop. And, since it seems like a lot of school-type folks run Macs, getting more familiar with OS X would be a plus.

But seriously, did it have to ship from CHINA!!?!?

I guess this puts my espoused globalism to the test. I mean, China? I would have been ok with Taiwan or HK, but the PRC? I wish I was economically boosting some other country.

Thus ends the hipster rant.

I like your monograph.

To all those who keep running:

The days grow short, with the future anticipation holding promise and sway.
The time grows long when that future is does delay.
The nights are combed and surrounded by the void, the void where it never snows.
The moments are related to sound, that of a small bird, whose voice just knows.

Trends from yesterday gave way to finds of silver and gold.
Wings grew tired and the once proud failed to soar or be bold.
Fashion statements just proved to be a truth in a landscape softly lit.
Feathered by aniseptic colors and redoubled efforts of the mentally fit.

Leave here a stranger.

My head without antimatter

And... my visa is in Salina! It should get delivered today, I hope.... that would be ridiculously awesome.

Also, I succumbed to more vanity and bought a new laptop yesterday. It should get here this week.

Finally, I type short paragraphs.

Pair of splicers

http://www.american.com/archive/2007/july-0707/africans-to-bono-for-gods-sake-please-stop

I found this article fascinating, and very much worth reading. It's a challenge to try to differentiate cultural perspectives, but I think there are some very valid points here. We really can't just pour money into Africa blindly, but we need to have some accountability and foster a sense of responsibility for personal survival and sustenance. It's easy to think that our money will help, but if all we ever do is give money to bail people out of problems blindly, it's not going to give them the skills or abilities to deal with the problems the next time they come around. Education is usually better (but you would think I would say that, based on where I'm headed) for a longer-term solution. Of course, that has it's own socio-economic problems, but what doesn't?

And just to prove I'm not always serious, a line of Star Wars dialogue!

From Episode 4.5:

VADER: Are you the half-wit responsible for putting that thermal exhaust port on the Death Star?

ENGINEER: Yep. Are you the quarter-wit who told the PLANET-DESTROYING space station to get clear of the PLANET before attacking the rebel base?

nothing could be my ampersand

Ah, the decadence of summer. The bright sun, the slow burn of stellar reactors. The warm wind, driving around with the windows down, secure in the knowledge that comfortability is not far off. Blanket statements, covered refuges.

Aggregates of hospitality and licensees of our wildest dreams combine together to form some single synthetic closure to the cool days of spring. Wind and rain come together to leave their mark, and disperse like a wild flock of geese at the sound of a gun.

Into the breach, once more we venture. Not foolhardy or relegated to the direction of inadequacy, quite the opposite, we are not to be still and timid, but the brave, the free.

And I forgot just why today's so yellow, it makes me smile.
It's hard to find, it's hard to file, the will in all the while.

Soon, this national unit in which I reside will commemorate the short existence that it has enjoyed. Yet somewhere between the light and the sound, there holds in time a moment. A moment wherein to sit and reflect.

Though all of this may pass away, though everything we know will someday fall and be changed, there is a call to difference. No composure or completion could be gained, except through one name, one gift from God, one Son, one sacrifice, one path. Him alone, and none other, for we are recipients, not actors in any way.

There is no other name given among men whereby they might be saved. Not by right, nor by might, but by the blood.

The bright stars shining to meet the needful

I should go to bed, especially seeing as how I just got back from Memphis after driving 10+ hours to get there on friday, and 10+ hours to get back today. But the old, can't sleep Russ is back, os here I am, sitting in front of my computer, typing away on ye olde bloge. I don't think anyone even reads this anymore, so maybe I'm writing just to satisfy my own wiring.

Whatever.

I'm starting to get scared. Get scared of leaving. Get scared of changing from my admittedly comfortable and predictable lifestyle. Get scared of moving to a different type of job. Get scared because I go to one day of this two week training session right in the middle because I didn't really want to go to a two-week training session with x hundred people I really don't know, but yet felt I should go to some, and then when I get there, I predictably feel awkward and out of place because I'm me and I don't like meeting new people, and because they've all been there for a week, they're all teachers, and Russ is just Russ, insecure, awkward, columnar, abrasive, yeah. Get scared because I am suddenly beginning to doubt if I'm doing this for the right reasons. Get scared because I'm quitting my job, I'm quitting my job, and I've only really got a five month plan, I have no idea what's going to happen afterward.

It would help if I actually understood this whole thing. Sometimes, when people ask me, "are you excited?", I want to answer, "Honestly? No. I'm really not sure why I said yes I would do this, because I am not experienced or skilled at this job, and I have no idea how to, or if it is even possible that I can, survive in a foreign culture." Sometimes, when people ask me, "Are you excited?", I want to answer, "Honestly? I can't wait to go. I really hope that I will be willing and available to be used by God to do some awesome work, and I know I will have a fantastic experience."

I can't identify with people, I have virtually no ability to have a real conversation with just about anyone outside of a few certain people if the conversation isn't directly task focused, I can't speak any other language, I'm culturally bound up in myself. I have skills, I have energy, I can do anything I put my mind to, I have been put in this place by God, I want to be used by him.

I'm going to take my unstable double mindedness to bed.

Softness, goodness.

Faintly Painted Lines

I know everyone awaits my posts with tense suspicion.

Sorry for the interval since the last one.

I'm driving to Memphis tonight for a couple days of training. I'm hoping I get my visa sometime next week.

Soccer is fun, baseball is not going as well as it should be, I'm horrific, horrific at softball.

Not much else to talk about these days.

Hand of Evocation

I have roughly the same amount of paperwork to accomplish as if I were repossessing a Sherman Battle Tank from the Auckland Naval Yards.

But, on the plus side, my passport is probably in Salina! This is a cause for celebration and joy. I have to go get it from the PO tomorrow, and then start filling out the rest of the paperwork for my visa.

I went to a family reunion this weekend. Didn't get to see everyone that I had hoped that I would, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Things change, and things stay the same.

This whole blogging phenomenon is incomprehensible to me at times.

Elevators and Reliquaries

I guess I'm at a weekly blogging pace now. Oh well.

Here's what's going on now:

Baseball is going mostly well. We're 1-1, we won the first 9-8, lost the second 23-5. Kids are playing ok, we're just making Jr. High mistakes. They'll get better. Planning to play soccer again this summer. Need to start running at night so I can be in some kind of shape when the season starts so I don't have a coronary.

Passport application is hopefully working its way through the bowels of American bureaucracy quickly. It would be nice if the Lord would resolve that quickly, but if I need to develop more faith, I guess I'll get to. We all know how that goes.

I don't really have a whole lot else to blog about. I'm trying to wrap up projects at work, which isn't happening as rapidly as I would like because I keep getting more "we'd really like this done before you leave," and I need to keep sight of what really needs to get done because I would rather have 2 done projects and 5 mostly unfinished that 7 sorta unfinished projects.

I'm supposed to have a call with the school now, so herein ends the blogging.

Signatures and Egalitarianism

When I was a child, this life seemed to stretch out indefinitely, every next day hanging forward, out over the abyss of a night's sleep. There seemed to be an endless procession of days, never to be interupted.

As I grow older, I being to recognize that this simply isn't true. Some days, it seemes like the end, the eternity is right around the corner. Some days, I know that this time, the time which I grasp at with faint, fragile hands, the time that has been granted as a gift to me, the time is soon to end.

I'm entering an event horizon, one unlike any other I have seen forth in my life.

Last Friday, I accepted a temporary, 4 month position for the Fall '07 semester to work as the IT Coordinator for the International School of Kabul, Afghanistan.

Why did I do this, you may ask, and you would be justified in asking that question. I've explained it a lot different ways over the past couple of days, and there are many reasons that you can imagine for my doing this.

The simplest reason comes down to this: I have to. I feel like I am being called to do this. The reasons not to go don't add up. I feel like to not do this would be to ignore what I feel God is calling me to obey. If I do not do what I think I am being told by God to do, is this not a sin? If I choose to turn my back, what does this leave for me to do? I have no wish to be like Jonah, shivering in a cold sea before being swallowed by a giant fish.

So I go. I told my boss today. He was not, shall we say, jumping for joy, but I think he understands. I don't know if all of the rest of you will, but if you need to, e-mail me, call me, whatever.

It's still not 100% that I'll be able to go, passports and visas and governments may interfere. But even that will be the Will of the LORD who holds all of us in His hands. I am not as strong as I should be, not as sure as I would like to be, not as mature as I could be. But then, who of us ever is?

Thanks to God, who gives us grace far more richly than we deserve.

Simmering

I played on the Church's Coed softball team last night. We won 13-12. I played OK, a couple errors, 3-4 (I think.)

New story on the sidebar. I think it's my best. Maybe I should clean this up for publishing.

I don't have much else I can say right now. Dallas was a good time. We were learning how to live, we have been learning how to die, so as to live better.

Brain/Glue Deficiencies

I have nothing that's of worth to You, take all I have.

I'm stressing out way too much at work lately. I yelled at a tech support guy (don't worry, I waited until after I hung up the phone) today. I really need to calm down about work, because while it's stressful, I shouldn't let such things rule me. I used to always do pretty good about just letting it flow away, and nowadays, it seems that I let it explode more than I should, in unprofessional and childish ways. I've got stuff that is breaking repeatedly, and it took me days to notice th simple reason for it. Frustrating. I've got like 10 'high-priority' tasks on my list to do, and I'm just churning away at them.

Bipolarity is revealed, because now I'm going to talk about how baseball practice wasn't too bad, I enjoyed beating Jonathan in Supreme Commander (back on a winning streak, baby! Two in a row, and should have been 3!), and I talked to The Formerly-Highly-Pitched-Voice-Dude [Seriously, his voice was higher than the sopranos in Jr. High. I have video.], who told me about his sermon (Available on mp3!), and about how he's finally done with school! Woohoo!

Additionally, the flood waters are retreating, my sisters sent me cool e-mails the past couple of days, and I'm getting married on a Saturday! Ok, the last one is just a probability, but anyway...

One thing I have not done as well as I should have lately is read my Bible for the relationship. I've read enough for preparation for teaching, but not for just the relationship. I am really going to endeavour to do that better in the coming days.

I have nothing that's of worth to You, take all I have.

Turbulence

It rained something like 12 inches in the past two days. It took me 40 (normal = 8) minutes to get to work. I had to park a lot over and take off my shoes and socks to get into the office. It's pretty bad. We're hoping the water doesn't rise anymore, if it comes up 2 more feet, we could be in big trouble, as in, all machines get lost. Bad thing.

Went to a LAN Sturday. Played pretty well, if I do say so myself. Won a SupCom 2v2 and a 5FFA.

Solidified

I went to a funeral today.

Visitation was last night. I saw the boy who played ball for me, sitting alone by himself. I went over to talk to him, but what can I say to an 11 year old boy whose mother just died? I know he knows that his mother is in Heaven with Jesus, but he also knows that she isn't there with him. What can I say to the boy, to his dad who just lost his wife? So, I told the boy if he ever wanted someone to shoot hoops with, give me a call. That we'd be praying for them. What else can I do?

I feel inadequate today.

Carnelian

I ate McDonalds for lunch. For some reason, McDonalds makes me hyper. (It couldn't have been the candy or cinammon rolls, no.)

This is causing me to think it would be really cool if Dan Weyandt from ZAO covered vocals for Alan Jackson (who I had to listen to for a while yesterday morning because someone at work had their radio up.) That would be awesome.

Circumvent

Tech support is going to cower, like a mantis, before the aurora of my wrath.

That, or the harbinger of paranoia that says my employer is going to realize I'm grossly incompetent is going to paralyze me into oblivion.

Or, like a tempest, I'll just knuckle down, and solve the conundrum with the galactically colossal powers of my coding skill.

I had too much fun above, all so one person would enjoy it.

Divesture

These past couple of days have been some of those days.

My birthday was nice. I heard from family, got some stuff, had a good time. While my sister was disappointed that she mis-timed her call and so I was already gone yesterday morning, it's cool to have a message on my answering machine with her class singing happy birthday to me. Even if they were really hyper and not exactly singing, I can dig the screaming, it's cool.

I've felt productive at work recently. I haven't had to deal with near as much silliness on tech support stuff, and I've actually gotten some projects released for use, which was feeling like it was never going to happen, mostly because I've been lazy, I guess. I also got to prove stuff to various tech support departments, who now cower where the mighty call them, for they know their prepared scripts are inadequate against the might of my deductive logic. I've also screwed up some basic stuff, which makes me laugh at the depths of avarice that my ego succumbs to. I have to figure out how to work avarice into daily conversation.

I started trying to go run, which makes me happy but semi-sore. I'm doing 100+ situps a night, which doesn't make me as buff as my narcissism would like because I have too much extra fat around the middle. I am somewhat tired, because I don't like to sleep these days. I stayed up until 3:00 AM on friday night/saturday morning, because I didn't want to go to sleep. I do better on weekdays, since I know I have to be at work, but it's really easy to just say, "I don't care" on fridays. It's not like I do anything other than play computer games, but still, I just don't like sleep.

Baseball is going. I'm not a baseball expert, so my job mostly becomes the encourager/"Work Harder" coach. Which works, but I still feel slightly inadequate. At least it's fun, and the kids can't tell that I'm really not that much better than they are.

For some reason, I've really dug this song that I heard on Relevant.TV by a band called The Forecast. If you go to Relevant.tv and listen to the song, it may puzzle you that I like it, because the song is a light, airy, sappy song of a relationship that seemingly failed. And I really don't get why I like it, but I do. Even more surprising, I heard it on the random playlist right after Norma Jean, and I don't find it odd that I went from hardcore to... semi-country, and liked both songs.

All this sounds fine, right? And I don't mean to make it otherwise. There are just some things that I let keep this from being as good as it could.

First, my birthday isn't wonderful because it makes me miss my sister. It also annoys me when people tell me, basically unsolicted, that they didn't get married until they were my age + X (where X is a random whole number between -1 and 12), and I don't have anything to worry about yet. It's like that low-level pain that comes with a bruise, or the slight headache you can't quite shake. Thanks, I know I have plenty of time, that doesn't make it any less uncomfortable when you remind me that some of that time has passed me by now.

Second, Kidmo, the wednesday night program at church, finished last week. I like helping with that. And next year, it will really be different because the group of kids that I've mostly worked with the last two years will have moved up to the Jr. High ranks. Even though there are still good kids in the program, it's just different. It was really... refreshing to go and help out with that during the middle of the week, and I'm going to miss it.

Third, the mother of one of the kids on my basketball team died on Sunday, somewhat unexpectedly. She was a real Christian lady, and even though I know that God has plans for everything, it's still a sad event for the family, her husband and four kids. They'll have lots of adjustments to make, not just with life, but with school, activities, the kind of things that you have to change when you're homeschooled and your teacher passes away. I hope the kids are doing ok.

That's been the past couple of days for me. Some good things, some things not as good.

I can't complain, all my bills are paid, all my needs met. I just have to truly learn to accept the good with the bad, and use both as opportunities for growth in Christ.

Twenty Three

Happy birthday to my really cool sister who had her class call and sing Happy Birthday to me from Turkey, and who sent me Alastair Reynolds' new book!

And thanks to my family, who gave me a bunch of cool swag.

The guys in my Bible study who took me out for ice cream.

My relatives and friends who e-mailed me.

My buddy Tyson, who called me from Texas to say Happy Birthday!

My work projects for getting themselves done!

So, thanks everyone, for making my birthday pretty good.

You're great.

Incomprehensibility

It's 1:00 AM, and I can't sleep. Again.

I shouldn't have eaten after baseball practice.

Derivations from the mean, the standards are wavering, and once again the entrusting the surge and the tide to leave the incandescence alone in the softening daylight. Geometric figures and reductionism contrast into a tightening friction from the abrasion.

I should also not think I'm relevant.

Being on hold with support.
Being on hold with support while listening to their E-Z listening muzak.
Being on hold with support while listening to their E-Z listening muzak with tantilizing breaks that make you think, "Someone is going to answer the phone!" And no one does.
Being on hold with support while listening to their E-Z listening muzak.
Being on hold with support.
Being on hold.

I'm telling you, Phone Support departments need to do the following things -
1) Analyze calls and keep a day or so's worth of logs so that if you call in and follow the same basic set of menu options, you get routed to the same person as before. Because if you had an issue recently, that person might be the exact person you wanted to talk to.
2) Have options so you don't have to listen to E-Z listening muzak.
3) Not leave me on hold for 15 minutes.
4) Hire more people so I don't have to be on hold.

I'm cool

I am now 2-0 on GPGnet in SupCom matches. I have moved from 11000ish in the rankings, up to 2900's somewhere. Yay me.

The second game I won because I teched up to a T2Shipyard fast, and then held his SABs off. My eco and scouting were horrendous, but naval FTW on Saltrock.

Most of you have no idea what I just said. I think that's funny.

The Clincher

X

He is risen, indeed.

Through all the days, through all the trials, all the wars, all the joys, all the blessings, all eternity. We are washed clean, He is risen, seated at the right hand of the Father, all is finished.

The death should have been us, but He did not make us pay for our iniquities.

He has defeated death, and we are His heirs.

He is risen. Christ is risen indeed.

Orchestral Vibes and Birds

It is early April. So why is it snowing? This is probably going to be bad for crops, but yet it's an overall positive thing for a region working its way through a water crisis.

Nevertheless, it's snowing. Congress should legislate no snow, April-October.

An aside, blogger's time is an hour off for me. Not DST corrected. This is odd.

Fictional Cheese

I got Chevelle's new Vena Sera album. It is pretty good.

Some days, I wish I were a man equally as comfortable in a suit and tie as one in a tattered smock and beret. Equally confident with a briefcase and with a 9. At one with nature and with the fierce avarices of technology. Happy in solitude and in the warm embrace of a crowd. For a moment, I can imagine myself as that one.

Then it all goes away.

Maybe I'll just try to be a pro baseball player next time instead.

Sold out

Basketball season is now basically over. I had hoped Ohio State would do better, but at least it was somewhat of a game.

I have lots of other thoughts and observations about other things in life, but what purpose does it serve to blog about them?

My creativity seems to be at an all time low. I think I need to exercise more.

Blah. This was the most uninspiring blog entry ever.

A page from the apocalypse

A soft incandescent slowly illuminates the recorder. A man's hand reaches in, and engages the pickup.

"My name is Damien Corl. No one died under my watch today. Would that I needed not to count this as an achievement. Instead, I would rather that I could return to the life I used to live. Would that that life were not closed off to me now. It happened slowly, like a cancer metastisizing out into the body. Still, I live somewhat in the old world. I drive home on the freeway beside them, in their shining cars, their sterile beauty. Am I a gaurdian of a world that left me behind, or a warrior tainted by the corruption he sought to banish? I don't know anymore. Jenny called today. Said she had two more samples. What happened that we started referring to these people as samples? Mark didn't come in again. Jim found him passed out on his floor, his breath intoxicating the three cats that probably hadn't been fed in a week. Jim checked him into detox. I'm not sure that was a kind thing to do. At least he found a way to stop the eyes from whispering in his head. No one died on my watch today."

Soon be through the floor

From xkcd.com, boy I like his comics.

Anticipation. So, what went wrong? Yeah. I'm tired and sore from helping folks move, and frustrated and disappointed that not as many people as I hoped came to help. But some people did come, and that was cool. The Faulknerian Antipope came, and even brought his girlfriend! I was impressed at that.

The rest of life... Well, let's leave that alone. It's always better left to the imagination. Wanting things doesn't make them real.

Find the door

I don't even know why I'm writing this. Even though I'm lost, maybe I'm not as great a failure as it may seem to me.

I led Sunday School for my 5th and 6th graders today, wherein we talked about words, gossip, and the destructive effect that our words can have. We re-enacted the story of Abimelech from Judges 9. I think maybe some of the kids got it. I don't know. I led College and Career, and we talked about Hebrews 7, and the Priestly order of Melchizedek, and Jesus' High Priesthood as being of that line and order.

Then, later after church, be still earlier today, I got a call saying that the mom of one of my friends from high school was getting evicted, and could I come help move. This lady is looking after a couple of her family members, none of them are in the best of health, and my buddy from high school is a couple thousand miles away with no real ability to get here. So they're in a bind, right now they don't even have a place to live once they get evicted. We moved some of their stuff into a storage unit today, and are going back tomorrow and Tuesday (e-mail me if anyone who reads this wants to/has the ability to help.)

How are these two connected?

Hebrews 7 says that Christ always lives to intercede for us. Hebrews says that only Christ was the perfect sacrifice and sacrificer for our sins, and that Christ has authority forever, that He is the way we draw near to the Father. As I was helping move, I thought about my own inadequacy. My own failure and my own poor communication with Christ. And though all of this misstep of our own, we can still be used by God, by Christ. But yet, I can't truly help the folks that we were moving. Christ is the one who truly helps. All of us humans are still corrupted, still defeated by our own fallen flesh. Christ alone is perfection, is completeness.

So as this woman is crying while she describes her problems to me, I search for words to comfort, to heal. I don't find any. None that come out of my human state are sufficient. Only He has the words. I don't listen well enough to find what He would have me say, and I have nothing to offer. No words to wipe tears from eyes. No words to ease the struggle. For that, I can't even apologize. How do you apologize for this? How do I? I do the only thing I can, and that's promise to come back. To try to solve the temporary because I lack the faith and trust in the Father's guidance to offer any help for the future.

We are sons and heirs of grace. That must mean more to me than it does now, it has to. Not just for my own sake, but the sake of those who seem to think I can help, the sake of those who have been entrusted in some way to me, the sake of the wife and children I hope to share myself with one day, and the sake of the One who died to be my Savior.

Harbingers and MonkeyLords

My new spectator sport is watching replays of good Supreme Commander players playing. Is that sad or what?

The main intent of this post is to point out that I'm not dead, just not blogging. I know you were worried. So I don't lose readers, here's a piece of exclusive news : I'm shaving tomorrow.

Woohoo.

Declining Intervals and Suppression

Disturbingly, I just got told by someone fairly well placed in the company to know better that it was impressive that the IT programmer guy had hardware troubleshooting skills. I can't tell if this person was being sarcastic or not. Because of this and other issues, it seems I can't communicate with anyone, nor can anyone communicate with me. I crashed the server yesterday, and I can't get this stupid report I've been working on to come out right.

Additionally, I did something to my arm last night that is related to the seperated should, I think, and so the arm doesn't really want to work right and hurts. And Jonathan made me sick. And arranged a call from his girlfriend last night to get out of losing in Supreme Commander again.

On the plus side, I had fun at Kidmo last night. And hey, I get to teach Sunday School this week!

On the negative side, I have lots of stuff that I should do that I have been putting off, like getting gas, or my oil changed, or checks so I can pay my bills.

Back to work. Done is the blog entry for now. Does anyone like the new story? Comment on the previous post!

Adjudication

I took down What He Had as the sidebar story, and added a new story, one I wrote a while ago, entitled Black. It's actually the introductory chapters to a longer novel that I never finished, and is my only real stab at writing fantasy. The novel is entitled Plateaus, and would have been an attempt to move from Fantasy into Steampunk into adventure SF. And yes, I had ways to make it almost work. Tell me if you're interested, maybe I'll write more. This post would, of course, be the place for comments on the story.

In other news, I'm not shaving for a while to see if chicks dig the new look. Don't worry, they won't, and I'll start shaving again soon.

Sun setting through pine trees.

Congratulations to Judy, and her husband, SSgt. Jonathan Matlack! Judy gave birth to Jonathan Daniel Matlack on Monday around 9:10 PM. He weighs something over 8 pounds, is rather long, but Judy didn't have to have a C-Section. The kid's fingers are, I kid you not, at least an inch long. They're huge. He's got lots of hair, and is darkening so Judy does get her brown baby. We went to the hospital last night to visit them. Some apparently minor issues with bands in his white blood cells means that he had to have an IV in his head, and he was just starting to nurse before we went in to visit. Cute kid, his eyes were pretty wide open, and did I mention that he's got long fingers? I think we were some of the first visitors outside of family, which is cool. It's weird to think my friends are having kids. Weird.

The Millitant Capacitor and I went up, as did his family. There's a semi-humorous story there, but as I'm not sure if The Millitant Capacitor's erstwhile girlfriend reads this or not, I really can't share it. It's that funny. Maybe some time pretty soon, though.

Back to work! Just figured I'd share the good news.

Kurtosis and Serendipity

xkcd is awesome.

Anyway, I guess I haven't posted in a while. Sorry for all of you waiting for the Defenstration fix.

Thanks to all who answered last week's name that person question. Special thanks to Brandon for entirely getting the point of the exercise, and mocking me. I always know I can count on you! Still, no one could come up with that definitive word. Does this mean that I'm non-standard, or does this mean that I have no coherent personality?

Last week was the tournament. We did ok to pretty well. My Jr. High B team lost both of their games, but I half expected that after seeing the other teams' rosters. But, the kids really played well, and I think they really enjoyed it. So it was a win-win all around, even though we didn't get on the W side of either game. My A team won 5th, we lost the first game 55-7 (yeah, I was a little miffed at the opposing coach.), but then won the next two, South Central and then Manhattan. So, overall, the Jr. High was a success. High School won their first game, then lost by 10, in a game where we shot 25% and our opponents shot 45%. So I really didn't think we had much to hang our heads about, some times you just can't get shots to fall. The last game, we won by about 20, and finished in third! Like I said, pretty successful tournament. The Jr. High girls made 5th, and the H.S. girls got third, I think we finished 7-7 for the week. Additionally, the tournament went well, I would say there were no major problems. Well, except for our concession stand blowing the breaker that also ran overhead lights in one of the gyms so that they played the game from 3 clean-up fluorescents.

As far as the rest of life... I don't have to get up ridiculously early anymore! Although I am thinking about doing it to go work out in the mornings. We'll see how long this lasts. I am enjoying not having to get up until 6:30ish, though. I mean, I really like coaching basketball, but it does start to wear me down. I think I am about through with sound at church, I think they've finally started to get some other people interested in doing it, which means that I am not going to have to be there for everything anymore. This is a positive event, in my mind, as it means that I won't have to deal with it all the time, and I can have more patience to spread everywhere else. In distraction news, Supreme Commander is highly enjoyable. I have finished two of the three campaigns, and have had a good time with it. Once I do finish the third, it's off to some skirmish for a while, and also beat Dungeon Siege II.

Leading to other comments. Now that basketball is done, I've suddenly got a lot more free time. I also don't have an easy source of ego boost, or emotional gratification. What I'm trying to say is that maybe in some ways, I'm too wrapped up in basketball. Or maybe that I have been ignoring other things, and so I used basketball to justify my apathy, or replace the needs. Just like how I eat too much junk food instead of real food. After a while, even though the junk food tastes good, you can't sustain yourself on it. I'm not growing, I'm slipping. Maybe now I'll be able to re-focus. Maybe. Maybe too, if I get this sound stuff straightened out, and I can teach Sunday School or go back to Sunday School, it will get better. Maybe if I can get up just ten minutes early, and spend time reading the Bible each day, I'll be able to snap out of the funk that I feel I'm in.

Unfortunately, even though I know actually working on a relationship with Christ is the best thing for me, I can't get having another kind of relationship out of my head. I also get frustrated by my shallowness. Maybe that girl. Well, she's good looking enough, but is she smart enough? That other girl is smart, but she's not physically attractive to me. Maybe her. Well, no, I don't like this part of her personality. Maybe her? No, she's way, way, way out of my league. Maybe her? I don't know her well enough. Frustrating, as these are paraphrased mental dialogues that I have within my head. Self centered narcisism is all I bring to the table. Therefore, I don't think any women are attracted to me, so it feels like I would be forcing it. Forcing them to go out with me. I mean, so maybe there's this girl that I might be interested in. But I don't really know where to go from there. Take your advice and leave me alone, it's not that I don't know what to do. I don't know why to do it.

Hey, I've got a great solution! Are there any women out there (who are not related to me) who read my blog and think I'm an interesting person who you might consider going out with? Send me an e-mail! Or if you can't figure out my e-mail address, comment on my blog with your email address. This simple act on your part will throw me into a further emotionally unstable state, and I'll have to ignore you for a not inconsiderable period of time while I attempt to normalize my reaction to your action. Meanwhile, you'll get frustrated at my lack of response, and realize that really, I'm a jerk. Therefore, when I do get around to talking to you, in an inarticulate, stuttering manner, you're be disinclined to have any kind of relationship with me. So it's a win-win! You have no functional commitment, and I'll have another opportunity to misunderstand how to proceed in life. What could possibly go wrong?

Wow, this was wide-ranging and schizophrenic. I'll leave you with one question :

Why is a raven like a writing desk?

Valuable. Too valuable.

I've beat Jonathan twice in Supreme Commander matches. I better let him roll me sometime here soon, otherwise he'll quit playing me.

Tournament this weekend! 8 games in three days. Going to be a lot of fun...

No other real life news. None of you people commented on my previous post, so I'm just going to assume that no one reads this anymore, and start denigrating people by name.

Boron cubes are best in potato soup

Well, now. I glanced at a couple of blogs over break at work today. One of them had a link to the ikeahacker blog. I read a couple of the posts, and was intrigued. First, I was intrigued at the stark industrialism that seems to pervade the 'design-chic' aesthetic right now. Just like a MacBook, it's all about brushed steel, raw wood, single colors, thick lines. So it seems to me. Then I was thinking about how I bought cheap chairs when I moved into the house that are now all mostly broken, and that we need new chairs. I thought, "Maybe I should check out ikea's online catalog, and order some chairs. They might be more expensive, but they'd probably last longer." I also thought about seeing if a friend I know who is a carpenter would build me some chairs. I also thought about building my own chairs.

Now, more to the point of this little article. I thought about Fight Club. Yes, Fight Club. Which I have to admit to having seen. It includes a line wherein the nararator says, 'I would flip through catalogs and wonder "what kind of dining set defines me as a person?"' The movie, while being violent and profane, is also a social commentary on the consumerism that our culture is sinking to. Me? Well, I admit my computer desk at home is black. I admit that I bought it because it was black. I also admit that it was cheap and on sale at the office supply store. My desk, while perhaps spartan and stark, does have some simple trinkets on it. That's right, trinkets. Not 'pieces of art that demonstrate my cool', not 'conversation starters', trinkets. Momentoes. Gifts. I have, outside of my computer and related accessories, a rock from the Mediterranean that my neato twin sister gave me, a onyx turtle from Turkey that my Dad gave me, a twigcil, a picture of my sister, and a cool lemur that my older sister gave to me.

My dining room table is a mass-produced piece (that came with the 4 chairs that are now one chair because the rest have broken), I have a couch and matching chair that I got second hand cheap, my parents' old "great chair", that is seriously one of the more comfortable chairs in Western Civilization to seat and read in, a coffee table that I nicked from my parents. My bedroom furniture is mostly second hand, my CD collection is housed in a functional, black piece of molded plastic, and my bookself was built by my dad twenty, twenty five years ago. Heck, even my 'dining service' is either second hand, or standard K-Mart fare. I have eight glass 'beer steins' that I bought at the Dollar Tree.

Why do I rant so, you may ask? I think about some of my friends. Good people. Have ikea-esque houses, apartments, whatever. Brushed steel. Stark wood. Art pieces. Funky shaped glasses. 'Nice stuff.' I ask myself, "Is my lack of conformity to the designer chic inhibiting my ability to have a girlfriend?" Maybe, just maybe, if I filled my house with ying-yang coffee tables, modern-art couches, maybe then someone will finally love me. Would it be worthwhile to make superficial changes to my life in a most likely vain attempt to attract the long term interest of an attractive and successful female?

Interrelated to all of this is a post that I read from Jeff Atwood of Coding Horror. In the post, he talks about his office, and how and what he has arranged in it. Now, I think Mr. Atwood is a highly competent and entertaining writer, and I read most everything he posts. This is not meant as a personal denegration, more of a lifestyle comment. If I needed to pack my personal effects at work, and leave, I could do it in two minutes. The only things that I have that I don't normally take home with me are a coat, a mug, and earbud headphones. That's it. The extent of decorations in my office is an old battery that came out of a dead scanner, wall art also known as project flowcharts, and two pages of xkcd printed out. When I move, it will probably take me two or three hours, at most, to transfer items from house to transportation mode, then from transportation to new location. It might take longer if I take the couches and dresser, but not that much more.

Get to the point, you're yelling! The point is made thusly.

People get their identity wrapped up in different things. For some people, they proclaim their identity throught their decorative tastes. For another set of people, it is proclaimed through their job. Others, their families, religious beliefs, hobbies, sports teams, music, fashion, geographic location, politics, community involvement, food, ideology, relationships, whatever. Me? I don't know how I proclaim my identity. While all these things mentioned above can be used to describe someone, there is usually one characteristic that overridingly defines that person. You know people, everyone does, that if you say one word, and it describes them. Here, let's play a fun, insular game. I'll name three characteristics, one of which can be used to simply define someone, and you post back on my blog, and tell me if you can easily and quickly guess which three friends I am referring to. The characteristics are football, tutoring, farming.

See, that was pretty easy, wasn't it? And additionally, no offense to any of the three people, but if you don't know them, you can make some mental extrapolations off of the fact that those characteristics define them, and come up with what might be a fairly accurate description of that person.

Which, again, leads back to the point. What word is a defining characteristic of me? Is that how I want to be defined? Because whether I want to or not, those definitions are what is prevalent in the minds of others. We can't help but seek for ways to classify and categorize people, to better understand them. If we're smart, it becomes less of a labelling game, and more of a 'construct the Venn diagram game'. But, really, what defines me? Do I need to work to change that perception? Am I unaware of the perception? Is this a problem, or not?

Marginally, I would also like to ask if anyone can understand why I whine out to the dark internet like this?

Oh, and the answer to the word that defines me is not emo. I don't have the haircut (the mullet is God's gift to men's hairstyling) or the eyeshadow, thanks!

surreptitious

My dreams are more and more asymmetrical of late. This is disturbing to me.

Supreme Commander arrived yesterday! Wahoo!

Unfortunately, I only got to play for half an hour, because after Kidmo I got shanghaied into spending more time on sound stuff at church. I really am getting frustrated with the whole deal, but what can you do?

Gums for real

It's nice outside.

It's not nice inside.

I've got your smoking gun.

Maybe if I listen to Norma Jean on my headphones really loud for a while, I'll actually care about something.

I'm so emo, and tired, that it is cold in here.

A pot of meal

Thankfully, it seems, the winter season is closing. And even though I enjoy the bleak desolation found in a snow covered landscape, the bitter cold overstayed its welcome. When one finds that it takes 5 minutes to warm up when entering from the harsh wind, it is time for it to get warm again.

I get frustrated with people often. I usually avoid letting it show. Like this weekend, when I was running sound, and I kept hearing stories about how often someone has gotten burned by having inattentive sound people who don't turn microphones up when someone goes to talk. Yes, thank you, I'm sorry you had those bad experiences, but why do you insist on remembering them when they were ten years ago? Similarily, what dost thou hope to accomplish by repeating them to me, who is currently semi-graciously bailing you out of a jam? Folks, these are the kind of things that make a sound guy disinclined to put much effort into your performance/song, or "accidentally" forget to turn your microphone on. Oh, and please quit saying things are a "soundman's worst nightmare." You apparently have no idea what my worst nightmare is, which is only to be remembered for screwing things up.

Sigh.

My juvenalia is fast reaching levels where continuing in it is untenable, and when that happens, I fear a superfluous conundrum of epistomological proportions. Forsooth, nigh unto the anglophiliacs I sway, peradventure some stochastic process intervenes in my days? Nay, such a revelation would undermine the very annealing that has been occuring.

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

Well, my days of not taking you seriously are definitely coming to a middle.

Man walks down the street in a hat like that, you know he's not afraid
of anything.

The Creature Walks

Ball team played OK last night, still lost by 15. One of the kids dislocated his shoulder. Again. During the game. Hopefully he bounces back soon. Didn't get home until 11:00. Am staying up way too late tonight typing this up.

I have had a request for a Valentine's day post.

Before I rant or despair for a while, I do have two humourous stories.

First, I was playing Supreme Commander for a while tonight, and I had 3 Monkeylords attack the enemy ACU from 3 seperate directions, and I managed to queue them up so they all fired their main, huge laser at him at the same time. Didn't think to get a screenie, but it was cool.

Secondly, I was backing down my driveway this evening to got to church when I realized, "There's a car in front of my drive. It's lights are off. It's parked. Grr." So I knocked on three different neighbors' doors before I found the one the car belonged to. Actually, it belonged to a guest, an older gent, who graciously came out and moved his car. Kinda annoying, but no big deal really. I just thought it was wierd, because I think he would have had to parallel park there. Also, when I had arrived at home from work, Jonathan was just pulling out of the driveway, so it was the second time today my driveway was blocked.

As far as Valentine's day...

Well, we didn't have KidMo tonight because it was Valentine's day, which I thought was kinda dumb. I told them I could sure be there, why couldn't everyone else? It was probably just as well, so I didn't have to see people talk about their Valentines. I went to church anyway to help with sound, since I told them I wouldn't do it on Sunday so I could teach Sunday School, so I would help the people that are going to do it since they've never done it before. And I think people just make too big of deal of it, and I wish people would just understand that when I say something, I don't mean it as a personal attack and that they're more than welcome to mix sound however they want to, no, if you like that, it sounds fine, I mix differently and I don't like how that sounds, and it's not totally objective because I don't listen to your kind of music casually, but people just don't guess that because I don't look or act to overtly crazy all of the time.

I have poetry/random brain effluence that I will try to type up and share someday soon.

My mother and father gave me root beer, and this absolutely awesome cake mix that all I have to do is put water in, stir, and bake. That stuff is probably the coolest thing since the Carter administration, and I am definitely making it this weekend.

It is ridiculously cold outside, and I hate it and wish it would stop.

Valentine's Day? I don't even care. But then, I don't care about a lot of things. I spent the evening with first, my computer, and then second, at church. Either I'm goofing off, or I'm trying to buy my absolution or reputation with works intended not to help, but to impress. The things we do just because that's what we do. Because someone asked us. Because we don't care enough to do anything else.

I have this sneaking paranoia that everyone at work distrusts me, and doesn't want anything to do with me. I am probably over analyzing, and know that probably it's that they just don't care if they interact with me. I admit that I'm maybe not the most inviting of conversation, but I didn't think I was an ogre, either. I'm not rude or anything, I don't think. I am also pretty sure that I haven't had a friendly conversation with a non-related female this year. Oh, I've had conversations, but about task-related things. This leads to disinclination to let myself care about Valentine's Day, because I know it's just going to make it hurt more if I start to think about it.

Hey, requestor[s], I tried, I really did, to muster some vitrol or energy to make this post. I only succeeded in drawing out the ennui. In a 32 bit world, I'm a 2 bit user. I've got my own newsgroup...

Disrepair

Reading World War II history books as a kid affected me enough that any time someone talks about WASPs (White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants), I can't help but think of the Women Airforce Service Pilots.

Is that wierd or what?

Respondent and in tune

Emerging to standard and the desolated relegation.
Spending cash, unallocated funds. For revelation, please ask.
Abacai and other intent calculative devices.
The deferred revolution is just one that isn't yet worthwhile.
Irrigation. And the unformed became retreated.
Causeway and the Foucalt. Free to derange.
Walking giants and errant soma dispensaries.

I'm going to waste it all, placed in all in a far away fate.
Feeling just like a reef as the waves and the ships approach.
Foreground was synthesized, and so where does that leave them?

Or never fare

Well.

Basketball going fairly ok. I think there's more potential then where we're playing at right now, but what can one do? Not going to start yelling and screaming at the kids, so we just encourage them and keep going. I was somewhat pleased with one of them on Friday night. Got real frustrated at a foul call, but sucked it in, brushed it off, and kept going. In the past he might have exploded, but hopefully this is a sign of increasing maturity.

The Supreme Commander demo is pretty fun. It's got a couple of missions, and then the full tech tree of one side. I have entirely too much fun playing the AI on easy and wiping it out with Monkeylords. :) :) :) I don't use 'emoticons' much, but just thinking about doing this makes me grin expressively.

I woke up early today. I have to be at church at 7:45, and it's 6:30. So I'm going to go play with Monkeylords for a while!

What the grappling hook didn't know...

Some days, I may not be able to speak in coherent sentences or spell my own name, but wow, can I parallel park.

Supreme Commander demo came out today! I wonder if I'll be able to download it tonight, or if the servers will be swamped...

Descending from.../.../.

Aww....

The Etruscan Naval Officer was on the phone with a certain person, but then left the room before I could get my computer booted up to play ZAO at an extremely loud volume, proving to annoy him and this... personage.

Hmmm... He's on the cordless land line... Nah, that would be mean...

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!

I was listening to ZAO and thinking, "Hey, I haven't listened to them in a while, these guys really are pretty good." It was then that I recalled, yes, all is right with the world, it now totally makes sense that I have no girlfriend. Honestly, it does! This is funny to me for many, some perhaps varied inexplicably, reasons.

Roman historiography, or the best SF from Wales?

Alastair Reynolds has a new book coming out in April! I can't wait. The only problem is that I'll probably have to wait until May because of the import... Maybe I can use the UK bookstore I bought Galatic North from again... I'll have to check on that when I get home tonight, so this is as much a reminder to me as a note of enthusiasm to both people who read my blog!

Bonus! The Prefect is a Revelation Space/Yellow Stone/Inhibitor novel! Not that Pushing Ice wasn't highly enjoyable, but I'm really excited to see Reynolds exploring more of the dynamic that he created in RS. It's such a rich universe, too, with numerous settings for any kind of story throughout the timeline...

Supreme Commander in 2 weeks, and new Reynolds in a couple months? The only better news, entertainment wise, would be Peter Jackson making the Hobbit moive, Vernor Vinge soon publishing the next "Zones of Thought" novel, GRRM finishing A Song of Ice and Fire, and Fallout 3 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. being good games. We can only hope.
